Sailing to New York and New England was always on our list of things to do, a dream we had. I thought “How cool would it be to sail into New York Harbor and anchor behind the Statue of Liberty on my own boat?”
In the summer of 2022, that dream became a reality.
We left from St. Augustine, FL with our friends, Greg and Dania, and set sail for a 4-6 day trip up the Gulf Stream to New York City. And it did not disappoint. Seeing New York from our floating home was everything we thought it would be.
We sailed right into New York Harbor. Negotiating all of the buoys and marine traffic was crazy, but Jeff did a fantastic job driving Wind Therapy. He loves to drive like that anyway. Me? Not so much.
After a week in the city, we began making our way through the East River into Long Island Sound, and finally up to Maine. Sailing through New England was a 10 out of 10. Our friends told us it would be. “Watch out for the lobster traps, and learn the details of your radar. With all the fog, you’re going to need it.” And they were right.
The sheer density of lobster traps strewn across the waterways was astounding. First of all, it made sailing and motor sailing really difficult. Secondly, how can there possibly be any lobsters left?
