I can’t believe we actually did it! We sailed for 70 hours from San Juan, PR to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Last night sucked. The waves were terribly confused. I have no idea how large they were. I think maybe 287 feet. (Don’t worry, Mom. I’m exaggerating.) Things finally started calming down around 1:00am, enough so we could sleep anyway. A lot of good that did me. My watch started at 2:00am. I finally went to bed at 5:30 and was awakened by a dream that I was in a space capsule re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere. The waves and wind were not cooperating, and the shaking, bouncing and banging noise inside my cabin was terrible. We finally tied up to the island-dock at the Blue Haven Marina in Turks and Caicos at 11:35am.
What’s an island-dock? It’s a dock that isn’t connected to anything anymore since the hurricane washed the rest of it away. So, you tie up to the piece that’s still standing, but you still have to dinghy ashore. It’s nice to be able to get off the boat and walk around.
Rumor had it that Turks and Caicos has the nicest grocery store ever. At least that’s what I’ve heard. We hired Devain from Conch Cab to drive us to town. We bought soap at the little holiday market and listened to the local school children singing Christmas carols while sweating under the tropical sun. So weird. Everything is decorated for Christmas, and it’s 87 degrees outside.
And yes, the grocery store was pretty nice. I stocked up on gluten-free crackers and different cheeses. We also fell in love with La Croix flavored water and Schweppes’s Ginger-Ale. Three bags of groceries cost $197. But we’re eating great!
