Jeff and I have spent most of our anchoring time in the Caribbean and Bahamas. We never thought much about underwater rocks because the water is so clear down there. You can usually see them as you come into an anchorage.
But not here. We entered the bay at high tide, apparently. When we woke up, the sun was shining, the winds were light and the air was crisp. I was standing on the stern getting ready to do some yoga when I noticed what looked like grass growing behind the boat. The patch slowly grew until it appeared to be a large rock that I didn’t remember seeing last night. I pointed it out to Bill who agreed with me. Clearly, the tide was going out. But the rock was a good distance behind us, so we just decided to keep an eye on it. For a minute. Then, some more plant life began to grow immediately behind the boat! Over the course of the next few minutes, seriously the next few minutes, the plant life grew wider and wider, revealing that it was actually a giant rock. Less than 6′ behind the boat, and it was getting bigger! How did we not bump into that at low tide last night? The current Gods must have been in our favor. We pulled up the anchor and motored out of the bay.
We were planning to leave that morning anyway, just not so quickly. It was really creepy watching this rock grow bigger and bigger by the minute. It’s like it was alive!
