Bimini Bobbidy

Bimini is such a cool island. We stayed here for four nights waiting for a good weather window to cross the Gulf Stream into Ft. Lauderdale. I had been here once before when I was 18, and it hasn’t changed much. Every other shop on the main road is still a bar, the grocery store shelves still only have a few items on them, rum is still less expensive than water, and the people are still just as warm and welcoming as ever.

Bimini Big Game Marina had bicycles for use, so we were able to tour the island from one end to the other. We made great friends with Mark and Mary and Alan and Debbie whose boats were in the marina with ours. Thank you guys for helping us move Wind Therapy in all that wind. Couldn’t have done it successfully without you.

If you go, you have to eat the lobster salad at Stewarts Conch Shack. For breakfast, look for the green two story house on King Street. There isn’t a sign. People just seem to know it’s there. The bottom floor is a little restaurant where you can get great French toast for $3. And if you order an omelette, you’ll get whatever they have in the refrigerator no matter what you order. And it’ll be delicious!

They really need the money, so hop over if you can and be a tourist. Stay south of the “gates”. That’s where the real Bimini is. North of the gates is just Resort World. Lot’s of expensive vacation homes. Eat where the locals eat. Shop where the locals shop. It’s easy to get there via Tropic Ocean Airways or the ferry from Ft. Lauderdale. If you’re brave, take your own boat. But watch the weather carefully. If the wind is from the north, you could be in for some big seas.

See you next time, Bimini.
