Well, that was exciting. We had a 40-mile sail to Great Exuma Island yesterday. We’re in the Marina at Emerald Bay for two nights. Another day of strong wind and high waves. And once again, we handled it fine. I realize now that I really don’t like sailing in these high waves. The wind I can handle better. But the high waves really get to me. They make me so uneasy, pissed off actually. And they give me a head ache. I wonder if I’ll get used to them some day.
The entrance to the Marina at Emerald Bay was extraordinarily tense. We had the strong wind and waves up to the entrance, which was extremely tight with a super strong current. But once inside, the water was calm. The wind was still high and it took two guys to help us dock the boat. One guy, Shottie, works for the marina. The other guy, Matt, is cruising with his girlfriend, Dana, in an old Island Packet 35 named Hobo. It turns out that right after he helped us dock, he and Dana sat down to watch Sailing Satori videos on You Tube. Nick and Kelly from Sailing Satori are friends of ours from St. Petersburg. They jumped on board with us in the BVI about 18 months ago and made two videos with us in them. When I saw Matt and Dana on the dock later that day, they asked if that was us. How bizarre is that? This guy helps us dock our boat in Great Exuma, then sees us on You Tube 30 minutes later. It’s so cool that we run into people in Annapolis and now the Bahamas who recognize us.
The Marina at Emerald Bay is lovely. It’s owned by Sandals Resorts, so we’re taking a day to pamper ourselves. I see several rum punches and some surf and turf in our future.
