The Truth Behind the Surprise

Some things take you by surprise. An unexpected marriage proposal, the promotion you thought for sure was going to your coworker, the fact that you actually like chopped liver, all good surprises – relatively speaking.

But sometimes, something awesome happens, and you didn’t capture it on camera. It was the perfect moment, the perfect shot, so you try like hell to recreate it.

Take this blow hole on Rat Cay, Exumas. We anchored just off of it, hiked to the island and were in awe at the power and beauty of nature. A wave approaches the island from the east side. The water rushes through an opening and makes its way like a freight train through a series of tunnels under the coral surface. You can hear it coming. Sometimes it just bubbles up through the blow hole. Other times it shoots 10′ in the air with enough force to knock your hat off.

We were here with friends when one of them had the great idea to sit on the hole and be surprised by the guiser. It was really funny, so we all took turns getting “surprised”. This shot took 16 minutes, but only because the camera wasn’t recording at first. But hey, it made for a good picture.
