There Are Worse Places to Do Laundry

I love my boat washing machine, now that it’s working properly. It’s perfect for our clothes and pillow cases. Sheets are a bit more challenging because of their size, but forget about towels, blankets, and mattress pads. The machine is just too small.

We’re here at Black Point Harbor on Great Guana Cay, the largest of the small out-islands in the Exumas – whatever that means. The bay is large and well protected, which is nice since we’re here for five days waiting for these 25-knot winds to blow somewhere else. There’s a nicely stocked grocery store, three restaurants that all cater to cruisers, and two bars. We’d heard that there was a great laundromat here.

“You have to do your laundry there. It’s amazing!”

How can an island laundromat possibly be amazing? You lug your clothes and soap, try to find change, look around for the cleanest machine, select the only wash mode that works, load your clothes, and hope for the best. Right?

Not here! This laundromat is amazing! It has plenty of machines, and they all look clean. The little store inside the laundromat sells dozens of detergent and fabric softener brands, and you can get a hot dog, plain or fully loaded, from Stick, the owner. He sells snacks and cold drinks, offers free wifi, and – here’s a big one – you can even get your hair cut! And the people who work there will manage your laundry for you if you want to have lunch at Lorraine’s across the street.

And the best part? Jeff and I are sitting here in the laundromat gazebo. THIS is the view while you wash, fold, and dry!
