Conception Island

It was a beautiful day on Conception Island. But it didn’t start out that way for me. Here’s the story.

We arrived at Conception Island after a rough overnight from Myaguana. As soon as we dropped the hook, Mike said, “My head won’t flush.”

“What do you mean, your head won’t flush?”

“Just what I said. My head won’t flush. It just makes noise when I try, but nothing happens. Oh, well. I’m going to check out the island.”

Wait, What? Your head won’t flush and you’re leaving me to figure it out? I guess I’ll have to learn how to deal with clogged marine toilets at some point. We might as well start now.

So, there I was, squatting in the bathroom in front of a full toilet bowl. OMG. After lots of troubleshooting, Jeff and I determined that the clog had to be in the hose from the toilet to the holding tank. The only way to unclog it was to disconnect it from the toilet and clean it out. But that meant draining the toilet bowl onto the shower floor. There wasn’t going to be any good way to do this. Put up the hair, don the gloves, hold your nose and let’s go.

It was a totally shitty job, literally, but after lots of scraping, lots of washing, lots of soap, and lots of Lysol, the job was done. The bathroom was as clean as the day it was new, and the head wasn’t clogged any more.

Later that day we for a little hike. Beautiful scenery, but thousands of sand spurs. I hate those. They always remind we of when we went to Cape Canaveral to see a shuttle launch when I was a kid. After we stopped the car on the side of the causeway, I stepped out without my shoes on, right into a sand spur bush. That sucked.

As we were hiking around today, we found some old rope tied in knots hanging from the top of a cliff. Obviously, it was an invitation to see what’s up there. But who put the rope there? How long has it been there? What’s it tied to at the top, and how well is it tied? Let’s climb up it! What could possibly go wrong with that?

Turns out, it was a good, strong rope that was tied very well to a huge rock at the top. And the new was fantastic!

After the beautiful hike and lovely swim, we head back to the boat for some R&R and dinner. We’re off again tomorrow.
